This is the second in an annual series of seminars looking at model-based insights on the impacts of market risk and policy uncertainty in energy investment, with particular emphasis upon the risks posed by climate change policy evolution. Key topics include the management of carbon price risk, the inter-relationship of carbon to energy prices, the evolution of longer term markets for carbon and the impacts of market risk and policy uncertainty on energy investment. Model-based insights will draw upon market simulation, real options, portfolio effects, risk analysis, forecasting and investment decision analysis techniques.

Some of the latest research in this area will be presented to facilitate discussion on several crucial topics, such as:
  • How does uncertainty in policy formation affect the industry, and how does industry behaviour affect policy?
  • How do the prospects of resource scarcity and new technology amplify risk?
  • What are the effects of policy risks associated with climate change?
  • Will the industry become more volatile and cyclical?
  • What kinds of energy companies will perform better?
Sessions will be a mixture of policy discussion, new decision methodologies, and descriptive analyses.

This seminar continues the successful series of sessions organised in 2007, where an impressive group of experts, drawn from a balance of researchers, industrialists, investment bankers, and policy-makers engaged in extensive discussions on technology, fuel, market and climate change risks influencing the energy sector. The stress was upon new insights and analyses, and a prominent feature was the generous time allowed in each presentation for informed discussion between delegates and speakers. The size of participation is limited in order to retain this important feature.

Again, in 2008, a similar balanced group of leading experts will be involved. The seminar will be faciltated by Dr William Blyth from Chatham House and Professor Derek Bunn from London Business School. Several policy analysts from the UK Government departments involved in these questions, as well as researchers from LBS who are working with them, will contribute their findings and observations on the related topics.
